Of the 22 films that were vying for the top prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, not one was directed by a woman. The sad truth of the matter is even as more stories about women are starting to be told by the film industry, the business is still overwhelmingly dominated by men. According to The Celluloid Ceiling: Behind-The-Scenes Employment of Women in the Top 250 Films of 2011 women accounted for “18% of all directors, executive producers, producers, writers, cinematographers and editors working on the top 250 domestic grossing films.” The report also noted that they directed only 5% of the films in 2011, a decrease of two percentage points from the previous year. The statistics are especially depressing when we remember that just two years ago Kathryn Bigelow took home the Oscar for Best Director for her work on The Hurt Locker.
